Millions of Medicaid Members Will Soon Lose Coverage

During the COVID-19 Public Health Emergency (PHE) nearly all Medicaid, Children’s Health Insurance Program (CHIP), and Expansion members were able to stay enrolled in their current health coverage regardless of their eligibility.  The PHE is now set to expire on May 11, 2023 and states are allowed to begin removing ineligible members from their Medicaid programs as early as April 1, 2023.  Medicaid renewals take place throughout the year.

Employers should anticipate that some of their eligible employees who are currently enrolled in Medicaid may wish to consider joining their employer plan under qualifying event rules. Loss of Medicaid is a qualifying event for employer plans and those individuals experiencing a loss have 30 days to apply for coverage from the date of loss.
