Pre-Existing

Definition:

A medical condition diagnosed prior to the effective date of the health plan.

Application:

An insurance company will request a list of the physicians and other medical providers you have seen prior to the effective date of the plan to investigate pre-existing conditions. They will review what you were seen and treated for and make a determination on whether these conditions will be covered by the new plan. Some states have passed legislation that forces plans to cover all conditions after 12 months on the health insurance plan.
